Ring Sling for a friend :)

This was a special request from a special friend, namely a team member of Malaysian Babywearers :)

She provided the fabric and specified the shoulder style she would like... just because this is not available for sale in Malaysia and it would cost a bundle to get in from where these kind of shoulder style is sold.

So, yes, I did it for her :)

Would love to post actions shots of this but I am just not into using someone's stuff before asking for permission. Probably wait for her to give me some? :)

Would you like to make one for yourself or for a friend? Click the link below for instructions.

Please read the note and please respect the owner's rights to the instructions. They are put up to make babywearing affordable, so, please don't make them take these instructions away.

WARNING! These rings COULD BREAK!

Some of you may have come across these rings. They are sold at sewing shops and are known to be used a sling rings by Indonesians. Indeed, in encouraging DIY ring sling (a more affordable choice to many), I did help people buy these rings, too. They are very affordable at RM5 per pair. Still great for those new to babywearing and wishing to try out ring sling options but certainly not for long-term use.
Though I have cautioned people of the possibility of them breaking, there is now one confirmed incident that a ring did break! This is why we do not encourage the use of anything that is has an obvious joint (if you have not seen one of these... they DO NOT have an obvious joint and are known to be used for slings!)!
If this can break, NEVER use craft rings... or curtain rings... or rattan rings...
While what you see in the picture will still be a much more afforadable option, especially if you are just trying out wearing a baby, if you are keen, you should just get Sling Rings (www.slingrings.com). Sling Rings has been tried and tested for safety and Peekaroobaby is now carrying them on behalf of Malaysian Babywearers.

DIY Ring Sling in Action

Had a chance to wear Arthur out today... though non-padded, this particular shoulder style seems to be comfortable, even with a more than 12 kgs toddler!

As it was a sunny day out, forgetful me who forgot to bring Arthur's cap used the tail to cover his head ;)

My first DIY Ring Sling

Our next topic for the Penang Babywearers' Gathering on the 21st June is going to be "Eyes on Ring Sling"... focusing on everything and anything ring sling.

Excited as I am to be discussing on something I do not us as much as the Pouch, I am aiming to create my own ring sling for the very first time... perhaps, someone would like to know more about DIY-ing than the no-sew method? I will then be able to truly share my thoughts on ring sling. Indeed, have been wearing Arthur (whenever I get a chance to wear him) with a ring sling since I decided on the topic.

Anyway, still hot and newly completed from the sewing room, with help from Jan Andrea's instructions, is this:

100% Cotton, Fully Reversible Ring Sling
Yes, those are aluminium rings you see.... from SlingRings
In a way, the pictures look better than the real thing ;p

By now, I guess it is no longer a secret that I love things that are reversible (so we can get more use out of it) and 100% cotton (so we are more comfortable) where slings are concerned... though I must admit that sewing a reversible 100% cotton ring sling is tedious task as it is just so bulky.

A pouch or a ring sling? You decide!

Many have voiced their curiosity over the pouch and the ring sling-which is better?? Seems like those are the main consideration for us Malaysians... probably because these are the only type of carriers that is available in the market? Of course, we have other carriers available like the Baby Bjorn, Ergo, Sweet Cherry etc. I won't comment on those as I'd never personally try them out.

While it is a matter of preference, as I have discussed earlier in Carriers Comparison, I just cannot stop searching for more answers since many of you raised the same issue being in between choices when it comes to a ring sling or a pouch. Nevermind my personal preference, for your benefit, I have found a very detailed and shall I say very good and unbiased comparison from one who is dedicated and sells both of them:

http://www.thebabywearer.com/index.php?page=pouchslingcomparison

This shall do it this time. Hope you find it useful ;)

Again, the most important here is that you enjoy babywearing... so, just go ahead with what you feel is right for you. Some would even find just tying a piece of selendan or sarong or even a bedsheet works (but, please, get something that's at least 6 feet or approximately 2 metres long.. longer is you are bigger in size) ! If you want to try that out, be sure to check this:

http://izaown.fotopages.com/?entry=215903

Again, there are many other ways to tie.. this is just one of them. Shucks... I am wishing someone could take those pictures for me.. still working on the photos for my instructions page. If I do get the chance, I will post on the other different methods to tie the selendang or the sarong.. hopefully, soon. ;)
