Miraculous Egg White brings fever down
On the 13th August, as we were getting ready for the trip to KL for the many Malaysian Babywearers event lined up over the weekend, something shocking happened... my little Arthur had a fit due to high fever and was rushed to the ER of Hospital Seberang Jaya.
Briefly, the fever started the morning of the day itself and as what I'd normally do (as there was nothing else but just the fever), I'd given him Paracetamol to bring the temperature down. After giving him the medication twice, it was still no better. As we were already packed for KL the night before, DH and I have agreed that we will first bring him to the Paed before we start our trip. Just as we were leaving our place, my little one was throwing a tantrum and asking for the jossticks for prayers. He knelt beside DH who had just finished praying and was eyeing me rudely... when DH was ready to pass him the jossticks, he did not answer or move but his eyes were still eyeing me rudely... after a few attempts of calling him to get his prayers done and no response (we thought he's still acting angry and just being rude not responding), DH put the jossticks down and pick him up... only to find him vomiting and urinating (he was already toilet trained at 2), lips turning purplis, only showing the whites of his eyes.... with no response.
I don't know if there is any word that can explain that moment better than shock. It might last a few minutes but to me, it seemed like eternity. We (or, was it just me??) were so shocked and frightened of losing him that we kept calling his name out loud and shook gently... things you see from TV on reviving someone who's passed out and he came to. As I rushed down the steps, cradling my little one, I can still feel that tremendous fear like it is happening now... I kept talking to him and made sure I ask him lots of questions se he doesn't pass out again.
Is it H1N1? Is he going to suffer? Will he stay with us long enough before we can reach the hospital??? It is something you would not even want to wish on your worst enemy.
Later, we learned that he had what is called a fit and the Dr informed us that it is quite normal for children between 5months old to 6 years old to experience it. As 'normal' as it is, it can still result in brain damage and things that you might not want to imagine... So, my little Arthur was warded. After checks and blood samples, the Dr confirmed it's just a viral fever... The word 'viral' got me worried as it was playgroup day and he was out playing with his mates...
Two nights in the hospital and the fever still didn't seem to go away. I was advised to keep wiping him down with cold water etc. etc. but nothing really worked. The fever went away with medication but when it has worn out, it returned...
My Sis called and gave me a remedy to bring the temperature down - FAST. Later, I learned it is something my grandma used to use on her children and us... RAW EGG WHITES.
How it works?? Mom said my grandma used to just spread the egg whites over the forehead and chest as how you'd brush pastry with them... Sis improvised it and advised me to "soak some facial cotton in egg whites and leave them on Arthur's forehead and chest (i.e. where it is most hot)... you can see the cotton dry up slowly and the egg whites cooked". So, DH brought a couple of eggs and we tried it out... it worked... within MINUTES! While medication is still necessary to fight the virus, the egg whites sure brought the temperature and our worries down. I have tried Bye-Bye fever and that sort and it didn't work.
My father-in-law brought other 'remedies' but I was not sure if I wanted to feed Arthur those... Admittedly, I am quite sceptical with 'remedies' that goes in the mouth. So, the eggs whites is a good recommendation I'd follow as it does not require swallowing.
Who would have thought something cheap and readily available works MIRACULOUSLY. Arthur didn't like me wiping him so much and I didn't really feel like disturbing his sleep by wiping him so it is a really good remedy that WORKS! Even the Doctors were afraid of the sudden change and would not discharge us until the next routine check. I still remember the Dr saying... "he looks and acts so active but it's hard to discharge him cos he's had high fever for 2 days... let's wait til later in the evening".
Still unbelieving, I did a search on the WWW and well... not only we use this but lots of people (but me :( ) has been using this for a long time. Some would put the whites on the sole of one's feet, too. Reading on further, it seems like a good cure for burns, too...

"I know of an exceptionally effective natural remedy for healing burns and lowering a fever: egg whites.
Egg whites are by far the best method to lower a high temperature within MINUTES! When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I had acquired a fever so high that I started to hallucinate. My mother was in a panic, she feared brain damage if something didn't lower the fever and FAST. My grandma told her to soak 2 cloths or hankerchiefs in egg whites and put on the soles of the feet (cover with socks). The egg whites instantaneously start to draw the temperature DOWN from the brain (where it is dangerous) to the feet (where it can do no damage). After that incident my mom used this method successfully every time I had high temp.
The egg whites are also a miracle cure for burns, even severe ones. Soak or coat affected area in egg white. While the egg white is still wet you will feel no pain from the burn. As soon as it dries up the pain comes back so reapplication is necessary. This method not only aleviates the pain it actually heals and prevents scarring from the burn.

Am I getting too boring?
It's World Breastfeeding Week from the 1st Aug to the 7th Aug 2009. In conjunction with it, I have been invited to quite a few places... for business and to promote MBW.
As I go around promoting our group and promoting babywearing... I hear myself asking this question over and over again... am I getting too boring? It is seeming like wherever I go... I repeat myself... again... and... again... in this case, I have been introducing people to babywearing... again... and... again...
But, then again... it feels kind of out of place if I don't do the introduction to the many carrier options available.
Hmmm...
Even at the Penang gathering these days... having a topic seems to be difficult. Especially most of the attendees are regulars now...
And, to make it seems like the world of babywearing is at a standstill (to me), IBW09 keeps hanging...
Could it just be me thinking too much of things? Or, could it be age getting at me?

Adventist Hospital Penang Nov 08
It was a fine and lovely day on the 23rd Nov 2008 and more than anything else, it is the day that the Kangaroo Club meets at the Penang Adventist Hospital and I was invited to give a talk on Babywearing :)
With quite a crowd and attentive listeners, it was a fun and hopefully, informational event to the participants.
As usual, to a crowd new to babywearing, it was a brief introduction on the different babywearing options available...

Babywearing Awareness "Walk" Kuala Lumpur
It's been quite some time since I have worn Arthur, especially since his preference for the strollers when we go shopping and such.
However, seeing so many little ones being worn together must have gotten my Little Arthur excited as he was (after months from our last babywearing moment), tugging to my sling and asking to go into it ;)
So, this was what it is... the Babywearing Awareness "Walk" held in The Curve/Ikano/Ikea on the 16th November 2008 organised by Malaysian Babywearers.
There was a much better than expected turnout... more than 20 babywearers turned up. Paired with husbands and family members, it was like a walking crowd of 40 people, more or less.
The funny moment of the day was when there was a Credit Card salesman approaching us. I was the first being approached (see baby, see business? as they were giving away all sorts of toys for those who signed up). I shook my head and walked on.... then, he saw another opportunity with Syaz and didn't want to let go it that... when Syaz told him she's got to walk together with us... we are in a group, he didn't believe it... until the rest from the back start coming up the same way... then, he knows it true. Indeed, I am not sure if I shall say he is surprised or shocked to see that many little ones at one time!
The plan for the day did not work out at all... many unexpected reasons.... the weekly weekend markets not happening in The Curve... the more than usual (well, sort of expected) crowd for lunch in Ikea...

Celebrate International Babywearing Week!

That's because babywearing—which simply means holding an infant or toddler in a baby carrier—offers numerous benefits.
Malaysian Babywearers are celebrating this practice during International Babywearing Week, November 12 to 18, 2008. Join us as we launch our month-long celebration in conjuntion with International Babywearing Week 2008 at the Little Penang Street Market on the 26th October 2008.
The event features a promotional booth with info and exhibits promoting the act of babywearing and its benefits. There will also be a charity fund raising sales, kids colouring contest, info treasure hunt & lucky draw. A babywearing show, showcasing different options in babywearing, will take centrespace around 2.00 pm.
New to babywearing? Come and find out more. Try on the carrier of your choice and get advice and tips from those who know!
Experienced in babywearing? Come and share you thoughts or just to have fun!
Bring your kids along to participate in the colouring contest. Bring your camera for a nice family day out. And, who knows, your photo could be the winning entry for our photo contest lauching the same day at Malaysian Babywearers!

Malaysian Babywearers
Psssst.... you might not know about this yet but we are in the midst of setting up Malaysian Babywearers, a stand-alone organisation to promote babywearing in Malaysia.
As with any organisations, I find that it is important to have a forum where we can store and discuss our ideas, don't you think?
With a limited budget, we need to get forums that provides free hosting, yet, not so dull... something different. After testing a few of the providers, I came across free forum hosting by Lefora and have decided to go with this one.
We may still be at the testing stage but do come and have a look at the cool features Lefora has... it is really something different. For one, you don't see the big advertisements on the top of the page. It also highlights the more important stuff and has a summary of the posts for easy viewing.

Yes, you read it right! There will be an International Babywearing Week, celebrating, well, babywearing and we, Malaysian Babywearers, are going to be part of it ;)

Calling Malaysian Babywearers
I have a dream...
... it is one where babywearing is being practiced by most parents in Malaysia...
... it is one where Malaysia will one day have it's very own babywearing conference, just like what they have overseas...
... it is one where babywearing is nothing unusual and rather than people asking about what it is, they will stop by each other and discuss about the many ways their babies is being worn...
... it is one where babywearing is finally a norm...
This dream of mine have motivated me to start Peekaroobaby...
... this dream of mine have motivated me to start organising regular babywearing gatherings (only in Penang and KL at the moment but sure hope that it will expand to more states)
... this dream of mine have given me a whole new meaning to parenting
As of today, this dream of mine is one step closer to becoming a reality as we move forward to set up "Malaysian Babywearers" as a stand-alone, non-profit organisation in the name of babywearing.
I am glad there are others who are keen to join me on this journey in realising the dream. Then again, it does take more than a few... are you up to it? Would you like to join us in babywearing advocacy in Malaysia?
All for the name of babywearing...
